what is an Irrevocable Stock or Bond Power?
I am a trustee of a trust fund, and I have this form here that was sent to me to sign, and it’s very vague. The form is a “Irrevocable Stock or Bond Power”. Someone suggested it is like a quit claim deed so I am checking it out.
it allows you to transfer ownership of a stock certificate without having to endorse the certificate. If you sign the certificate, it then becomes negotiable. Instead, sign the stock power EXACTLY as the certificate is issued and leave the rest of the information blank (this is filled in at the transfer agent). Take the unsigned certificate and send it to the transfer agent and then in a seperate envelope, send the stock power. Many people send both together, which is almost safe, but not as safe as sending them seperately.
In the future put all your certificates into a brokerage account or have them held in book entry at the transfer agent. This will eliminate having to mail them or to sign stock powers in order to sell them.
